Taranto - Grottaglie
Taranto Taranto
Taranto Taranto
Taranto
Between the Great Sea and the Small Sea, Taranto is symbolized by the majestic Ponte Girevole (Swing Bridge), which links the old island to the new city. Its history is very old, in fact it is pos
sible to admire the Doric columns, the remains of a Greek temple dating back to the first half of the 6th century b.C.
The Duomo di S. Cataldo (Cathedral of St. Cataldo), the imposing Castello Aragonese (Aragonese Castle), the Tower of the Clock, the Palazzo Pantaleo (Pantaleo Palace) seat of the National Archaeological Museum all ought to be visited.
With a clear and blue sea and alternating sandy inlets and rocks of the Ionic shores, the “City of the two Seas” is also a sailor's paradise.
Grottaglie
Grottaglie

The territory is a natural habitat of many grottos and natural caves, inhabited until the 13th century. Thanks to the presence of clay, it is by tradition a centre dedicated to ceramics.
Not to be missed: the Castello Episcopio (Bishop's Castle), old medieval Donjon dating back to late 15th century, today it is the Museum of Ceramics; the Chiesa Matrice (Cathedral) (14th century); the Chiesa del Carmine (Carmine Church) with its marvellous crib made with stone dating back to the year 1530; the Eremo di S. Maria in Campitelli (Monastery of St. Mary in Campitelli) (9th century), an interesting hypogean complex; the Santuario della Madonna di Mutata (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mutata), built in memory of a miraculous event attributed to the Virgin who “changed position”.
