Otranto
Otranto lies at the furthest east of Italy and for this reason it is called the "Gate of the East".
Not to be missed: the Aragonese Castle; the Cathedral (1088), which stands on the highest spot, on the remains of a Roman domus (house); St. Peter's Basilica (8th century); the Santuario di S. Maria dei Martiri (Sanctuary of St. Mary of the Martyrs), erected on top of the rise where, in 1480, were beheaded the Eight hundred Martyrs from Otranto; the striking Borgo Antico (Old Village), with a close net of narrow streets paved with old stones and buildings of various times; the Hypogeum of Torre Pinta, circular, an example of Christian Dovecot Tower of Roman times.
Otranto is also amongst the top ten seaside holiday resorts of Legambiente' classification (League for the protection of the environment).
