A culturally rich city, it is characterized by: the Pulo, a wide Karst dolina with caves and remains of an important Neolithic village; the medieval old town centre is characterized by the peculiar herringbone plan; the Duomo (Cathedral), the biggest church with domes made of planks dating to the Apulian Romanesque period crowned by two bell-towers (11th and 12th centuries).
Not to be missed are the two traditional dates which are famous in the whole of Italy: the typical procession of the Holy Week (Our Lady of Sorrows, Mercy, Mysteries) and the sea festival of the Patron Madonna dei Martiri (Our Lady of Martyrs) on the 8th September.
