Andria - Barletta - Trani

Castel del Monte - Andria
Andria

This city is famous thanks to Castel del Monte (Castle), built in 1240 by Frederick The Second, probably as a hunting residence or centre of learned entertainments concerning maths and astronomy. Situated on the highest spot of the hill, it hides mysteries and symbologies, beginning from its typical octagonal plan. Unique of its kind, it has been acknowledged by the UNESCO as a worldwide human heritage.

City of the Challenge, Barletta boasts the presence of the great Castle. A short distance away from here one can visit the Cathedral, with its Romanesque-Apulian style and the Challenge Tavern, where the challenge between the 13 Italian knights, guided by Fieramosca, and the 13 French nights originated.
Also, not to be missed are: the Pinacoteca De Nittis (picture-gallery), the Colosso Eraclio, the Basilica del S. Sepolcro (Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre). Not far from the city there is the archaeological site of Canne della Battaglia, famous for the clash, in 216 b.C., between the Roman troupes and those of Hannibal.

An important maritime city, it is one of most famous tourist cities in Apulia.
Besides the fascinating walk along the promenade, it is possible to admire the Cathedral, one of the most important Apulian Romanesque cathedrals, the Castello federiciano (Frederick's castle), the old town centre with churches, many noble buildings and the old Giudecca.
